Expanded Qualifications

Co-op Rate

The Co-op rate is granted under the following conditions:

  • Minimum ad size is 10 column inches (1/3 magazine page).
  • The advertisement must be paid for in part or in whole by supplier (manufacturer and/or distributor) funds.
  • The advertisement must establish local point of purchase by listing one or more independent retailers with retail outlets in The Washington Post local trading area. In certain circumstances, a toll free number is accepted in lieu of dealer listings, subject to Post approval.
  • The dealer listing must be limited to participating retailers only. A copy of the Co-op program or a letter of intent specifying the level of participation required by the retailer must be made available to The Washington Post upon request.
  • Advertisements offering products strictly for commercial use do not qualify for the Co-op rate.
  • Automotive aftermarket dealer association advertisers qualify for Special Industry rates.
  • Auto Industry Rate

The Auto Industry rate applies to product advertising placed by automobile manufacturers and dealer associations. This rate is also available to automotive aftermarket dealer association advertising. Advertising that does not feature product will be billed at the General rate.

    Local Cosmetic Rate

Available to advertisers of fragrances, skin creams, lipsticks, colognes and directly related products only. The name/logo of a local Washington retailer must be an integral and clearly identifiable part of the advertisement. Insertions without the name/logo of a local Washington retailer will be billed at the General rate.

    Out-of-State Retail Rate

Available to retail advertisers that engage in retail-to-consumer business from their own permanent retail outlet outside The Washington Post local trading area. Retailers within the local area should refer to the Retail Advertising rate card.

    Travel/Resort Rate

Applies to hotels located outside the Washington metro market and to all resorts, chambers of commerce, tourist boards, tourist commissions, visitor bureaus and non-local museums and theatres. It also applies to all travel agents promoting their own services and to locally-based tour bus operators. All other travel advertising, including ads having the primary purpose or intent of promoting transportation services, will be billed at the General rate. Travel agent multi-product advertising that includes two or more General rate advertisers (e.g. airline, cruise line, car rental, etc.) will be billed at the Special Industry rate.

    Local Broadcast and Cable Rate

Available to radio stations, television stations and cable systems located within The Washington Post local trading area. National television and radio broadcast networks, national cable networks, programming syndicators, national television producers and cable companies that do not operate local cable franchises will be billed at the General rate.

    Out-of-State Real Estate Rate

Applies to the advertising of private homes; residential hotels and resorts; commercial, vacation and retirement property; developed and undeveloped land; timeshares, apartments and flats; and any other type of real estate when the advertised property is located outside The Washington Post local trading area. Advertisers of local real estate should refer to the Retail Advertising rate card.

    Local Recruitment Rate

Applies to employment advertising when the advertised job or position is located within The Washington Post local trading area. For employment located outside that area, General rates apply. For employment advertising that contains jobs both inside and outside the local trading area, the General rate applies.

    Mail Order Rate

Available to advertisers who do not have an outlet in The Washington Post local trading area. The advertisement must offer a product through the mail with a response coupon. Before mail order advertising is accepted, a mail order information form should be completed and returned for review. The Washington Post may request samples of products for its review.
